Abstract:

Objective

To retrospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of embolotherapy in patients with iatrogenic uterine arteriovenous malformations(AVM).

Methods

A retrospective review of all patients who underwent transarterial embolization for iatrogenic uterine AVM from January 2005 to December 2012 was performed.Thirty-two patients(median age,31 years;range,18-45 years)were included in this study. The complications, control of hemorrhage and outcome of subsequent pregnancies were assessed.

Results

A total of 37 embolization procedures were performed in 32 patients.Five patients required repeated embolizations for recurrence of bleeding. The technical success rate of embolization was 100%.Bleeding was controlled in 30 patients(30/32,93.75%)after the embolization procedures.Eight patients subsequently became pregnant and three patients had uneventful intrauterine pregnancies carried to term.Seven patients had postembolization syndrome and no other complications occurred.

Conclusions

Percutaneous embolotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for iatrogenic AVMs.
