Clinical value of serum procalcitonin in patients with bacterial liver abscess treated by percutaneous drainage

Objective

To explore clinical value of serum procalcitonin（PCT）in patients with bacterial liver abscess treated by percutaneous drainage.

Methods

Data of 38 patients with bacterial liver abscess treated by percutaneous drainage was retrospectively analyzed.The results of serum PCT，white blood cell（WBC）percentage of neutrophile granulocyte（NE%），blood cultures and bacterial culture of pyogenic fluids were analyzed.

Results

The 38 patients were divided into the positive group（n=8）and the negative group（n=30）according to the results of blood cultures.There was no significant difference in age，gender，WBC and NE%between the two groups（all P﹥0.05）.PCT in positive group was higher than that in negative group（P﹤0.05）.

Conclusions

The PCT value increased significantly in patients with bacterial liver abscess and positive blood cultures. PCT is superior to WBC and NE%，and it can be used as an important indication to enhance antibiotic treatment and prompt percutaneous drainage.
