To discuss the therapeutic effectiveness of ¹²⁵I seeds combined with drainage in the treatment of large tumors with liquefaction necrosis.

There were three patients in the study, including 1 case of thyroid papillary carcinoma, 1 case of abdominal malignant leiomyoma, and 1 case of esophageal cancer metastases to the chest wall. Three patients underwent ¹²⁵I seeds implantation under ultrasound and CT guidance. The activity of ¹²⁵I seeds ranged from 0.4 to 0.6 mCi and the D90 of the tumor ranged from 40 to 80 Gy. Liquefaction necrosis drainage was used in all 3 cases, including 1 case of incision drainage and 2 cases of drainage tube. The efficacy was evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumor (RECIST) in 2000.

The volume of drainage was 200-2400 ml. The results showed complete remission in 2 cases after 5 months and 1 month of surgery respectively and partial remission in 1 case after 4 months of surgery, while no ¹²⁵I seeds-related adverse reactions such as fever and infection were observed.

¹²⁵I seeds implantation combined with drainage in the treatment of large tumors with liquefaction necrosis is safe and effective, and this study provides a new idea for clinical treatment of this kind of tumors.
